The Carbondale Lions Club was founded on July 15,1921, with 52 charter members. At this moment there are 68 members. Civic projects came early. In 1925 the club spearheaded the establishment of the first Mosquito Abatement District in the State. In the 1930's the club funded and installed street signs in the city and continued the project until the late 50's. Since the 1930's the club has provided eye glasses for needy children and has collected over 70,000 pair to date and traditionally has raised money for the Hadley School and for leader dogs for the blind. Throughout the years the club has funded and participated in too many service projects to mention here. Some of the major annual events: PANCAKE DAYS, held in the Fall and Spring, is the major fund raiser for the service activities of the Club sporting the world's largest pancake rotisere; FOURTH OF JULY FIREWORKS in Carbondale has been a spectacular event for all ages since 1968; Diabetes Awareness Day is held every year in support of The American Diabetes Association recognizing the relationship of Diabetes and sight related illnesses; OUTSTANDING STUDENT CITIZEN AWARDS are Presented Monthly at Middle School and High School levels followed by a scholarship award to an outstanding high school senior at the end of the school year; THE DAVID KENNEY SERVICE AWARD This award is given to a resident of Southern Illinois who best exemplifies a spirit of patriotism, dedication, and service toward making our country, our state and our community a better place to live, work and enjoy. It is limited to individuals who live in Southern Illinois, south of Interstate Route 64 and are not a member of the Carbondale Lions Club. In the words of David Kenney for whom the award is named, "The Carbondale Lions Club is not merely a meet and lunch bunch. They participate; they work and work. In all their projects they have made a small contribution to the community and the public good, and have a pardonable pride in what they have done".
THE LIONS OF CARBONDALE FOUNDATION
